Music Sales is pleased to announce the purchase of a share of Irene Cara’s rights, including the iconic 80s megahit “Flashdance What a Feeling.”
Irene’s multifaceted career in the entertainment business began at an early age. As a five-year-old she began playing piano by ear and dove headlong into music, acting, and dance studies. Soon she was appearing on Spanish television and on Broadway, and recording her first record at the age of eight. A stint on the hit TV series The Electric Company starring Bill Cosby and groundbreaking miniseries Roots: The Next Generation soon led to motion picture roles.
It was the aptly titled 1980 blockbuster Fame that catapulted Cara to stardom. In her role as Coco Hernandez she sang the two songs that would see the film’s soundtrack achieve multiplatinum success, the Academy Award-winning title song “Fame” and hit single “Out There On My Own.” Cara herself was nominated for two Grammys as Best New Female Artist and Best New Pop Artist as well as for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Artist in a Musical.
Irene cemented her place in pop culture history with the phenomenon that was the 1983 movie Flashdance. Her soaring vocals on the #1 hit “Flashdance What a Feeling” helped define the decade and the song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. An instant classic, the anthem is an ongoing inspiration to fans new and old.
Irene Cara continues to thrill audiences, touring around the world. She is currently working with Hot Caramel, an all-female ensemble she has put together, which is soon to release its debut album.
